He was the second of five children born to Doris Ann Tiffany, a homemaker, and Homer George Gere. This is a middle-class Methodist family. His father taught him to play the trumpet, the guitar, the banjo and the sitar.
After two years at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, on a gymnastics scholarship, he dropped out without graduating.
Education career
He got his start in theatre while studying and later plays a small role at the Princetown Paly House and Seattle Repertory Theather.

He made his debut in 1977 with the film ‘Looking for Mr Goodbar’.

In 2002 he married the model and actress Carey Lowell, after several years of relationship. They had a son in 2000. In April 2018, he married the Spanish Alejandra Silva. In February 2019 they were the parents of a son.
