Richard Gere was born on August 31, 1949, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Richard Gere Family
He was the second of five children born to Doris Ann Tiffany, a homemaker, and Homer George Gere, an insurance agent for the Nationwide Mutual Insurance Company. This is a middle-class Methodist family. His father taught him to play the trumpet, the guitar, the banjo and the sitar.
Richard Gere Studies
In 1967, he graduated from North Syracuse Central High School, where he excelled in gymnastics and music, playing the trumpet. After two years at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, on a gymnastics scholarship, he dropped out without graduating.

He got his start in theatre while studying and later plays a small role at the Princetown Paly House and Seattle Repertory Theather. He created a rock band that had no impact. He landed a role on Broadway in the play Grease. He rose to fame from his third film, ‘Looking for Mr Goodbar’, (Richard Brooks, 1977).

In 1999 he was declared by People magazine as the sexiest living man on the planet. He won the Italian equivalent of an Oscar, thanks to his work in Days of Heaven. He is also the recipient of a Theatre World Academy Award for his acclaimed performance in Bent, a play that premiered on Broadway.
In January 2003 Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger received the Golden Globes for Best Actor and Actress for Chicago.
In 2007, he co-starred in The Hunting Party, a thriller set in Bosnia, later working with Christian Bale, Heath Ledger and Cate Blanchett. in the semi-biographical film about Bob Dylan, Im Not There.
On September 23, 2007, he received the Donostia Award during the San Sebastián Film Festival in recognition of his career.
In 2008, he co-starred with Diane Lane in the romantic drama Nights in Rodanthe.
He received an award from the 34th Cairo International Film Festival in December 2010.
In 2012 he released Arbitrage. In 2016, he received rave reviews for his role in Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer (2016).
Richard Gere Foundation
He established the Gere Foundation, which contributes to numerous health, educational, and humanitarian projects. For Buddhist confession, Gere was engaged in the campaign for the independence of Tibet and in his support for the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama.

His first book, Pilgrim (Pilgrim), was published in 1997. It is a collection of images that represents his path as a Buddhist. In addition, he has provided support to the American Foundation for AIDS Research, AmfAR, the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, and the AIDS Research Alliance.

He had relationships with actress Penelope Milford from 1971 to 1978 and with painter Sylvia Martins from 1978 to 1986. He was also dating Tuesday Weld, Carole Mallory, Dawn Steel, Loree Rodkin, Diane von Furstenberg, Barbara Carrera and Barbra Streisand, among others.
Between 1991 and 1995 he married supermodel Cindy Crawford.
In 2002 he married the model and actress Carey Lowell, after several years of relationship. They had a son in 2000. In September 2013 they separated after eleven years of living together due to lifestyle differences.
In April 2018, he married the Spanish Alejandra Silva. In February 2019 they were the parents of a son, Alexander, and in April 2020 of another child.
