DC Studios has finally released the first official trailer for Blue Beetle. The trailer gave fans their first look at Jamie Reyes and his alien armor in action. The protagonist, played by Xolo Maridueña, is a grumpy teenager who receives a box of pot-bellied burgers containing a beetle that grants him incredible powers. While the initial shape shifting scene is pretty gruesome, the video also showcases the benefits of incorporating alien technology, as Jamie flies into low orbit and transforms her limbs into different weapons. Kord Industries was also featured prominently in promotional material. Victoria Kord said that even though the beetle chose its owner, it still belonged to them. Die-hard DC fans will recognize the appearance of Ted Kord’s Blue Beetle Bug, while there’s more than one blue beetle in the DC Universe comics, Cobra Kai actor Xolo Maridueña will don Jaime Reyes’ blue armor in the upcoming movie. Created by Keith Giffen, John Rogers, and Cully Hamner in 2006’s Infinite Crisis #6, Jaime is a teenager who becomes a superhero after an alien device, a beetle, is injected into his back. Jaime is the third Blue Scarab after Dan Garrett and Ted Kord, and his armor grants him many weapons and abilities, including flight and more, all thanks to the Scarab.
Blue Beetle Friends, Family and Enemies
Besides the official poster and promotional artwork for Blue Beetle, other official images from the film were scarce before the new trailer, and the leaked images have been taken down. Besides Maridueña, the cast of Blue Beetle includes actors such as comedian George Lopez and What We Do in the Shadows star Harvey Guillen. Mayans MC star Raoul Max Trujillo and actress Susan Sarandon will portray the film’s villains, Conrad Carapax/Carapax the Indescrutible Man and Victoria Kord respectively. While the former is a robot villain, Victoria Kord is a military-industry mogul created especially for the film, and her possible connection to Blue Beetle Ted Kord is yet to be determined.
Blue Beetle is one of four live-action DC Universe films to be released in 2023. It is preceded by Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash movie, which comes out in June, while Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom doesn’t come out until December.
DC Studios is now led by co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, who have multi-year plans for the DCU. Its first list, titled “Chapter 1 – Gods & Monsters,” features some of the revamped DCUs slated for late January 2023, which Gunn discusses in a video. The DC boss said The Flash would reboot an existing cinematic universe that began with Iron Man in 2013, adding that the upcoming Blue Beetle is “a great kids’ movie and a big part of the DCU.”
