Career

Fertik graduated from Harvard Law School. During his undergraduate studies, he founded and sold a software company called TruExchange. He worked as a clerk for the Sixth Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals after graduating. While on the court, he read media stories about cyberbullying and its effects on people’s lives. Fertik says, “I noticed something about the Internet that bothered me: Anyone can say anything about anyone.” In 2006, he turned down a job offer in Washington and moved to Silicon Valley to start Reputation.com (formerly ReputationDefender) even though it wasn’t important whether it was right or wrong.
ReputationDefender started off offering services for online reputation management and suppression of negative content, but later the ReputationDefender brand was sold off and the remaining company became just Reputation.com, a software-as-a-service company. In venture capital, Reputation.com raised $67 million. It was made for parents who wanted to protect their children’s online reputation, but professionals were primarily interested in the service. As social media became more prevalent, it introduced more features to it. Fertik pioneered online reputation management.

In this same year, Fertik co-authored a book with David Thompson entitled “Wild West 2.0: How to Protect and Restore Your Online Reputation on the Untamed Social Frontier”.
In addition, he also maintains a guest column for Inc. Magazine and writes blogs for the Harvard Business Review. He also suggests and participates in various advocacy programs. He is joining the Advisory Boards of the Internet Keepsafe Coalition (iKeepSafe) and the Future of Privacy Forum.
He also participated in the mockumentary Bubbleproof from Femto Films in the year 2017.
